Control of the small movements of the hand and fingers, the base that handwriting sits on.
Among 320 children aged 3 to 6, a mature pencil grasp appeared in 48% of the youngest group and 90% of the oldest (Schneck and Henderson, 1990).
Variation within an age is wide: at five and a half, close to half do not yet show a mature grasp. That is why line work comes before letters.
Lines, waves, zigzags and loops are the shapes letters are built from. Once the hand knows them, the letter stage goes more smoothly.
