Giving support in the range where a learner can succeed with help, then removing it step by step.
The range between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with help is the zone of proximal development. Scaffolding is the temporary support placed in that range.
The support has to come down. Otherwise the learner never practises without it, which is why writing sheets move from grey letters to an empty line.
When helping, a hint beats an answer. Leave the last step for the learner.
