Phonological awareness

Also known as: phonemic awareness
The ability to hear, split and manipulate the sounds of speech. It develops before letters and underpins reading.
The skill generally grows from larger units to smaller ones (Anthony and Francis, 2005): syllables first, then rhyme, then individual phonemes.
Following 67 preschoolers for a year, rhyme awareness developed before phoneme level skill, and syllable and rhyme awareness predicted later phoneme awareness (Carroll et al., 2003).
It can be practised without any letters at all: finding objects that start with the same sound, collecting words that end alike, clapping syllables.
