A period when known words increase sharply. Notably, it does not appear in every child.
Goldfield and Reznick found a sharp increase in 13 of 18 children, while the other 5 grew steadily without one (1990).
In another study of 38 children, only 5 showed what could be called a clear spurt (Ganger and Brent, 2004).
So rather than treating a word count at an age as the benchmark, look at how much speech is directed to the child. Children who heard more child directed speech understood words faster and knew more of them months later (Weisleder and Fernald, 2013).
