Dialogic reading

A way of sharing a book in which the adult asks and responds rather than only reading aloud.
Whitehurst and colleagues showed that changing how an adult reads, rather than how often, increased children's expressive vocabulary (1988).
Later syntheses found the same direction for vocabulary and story comprehension (Mol et al., 2008; Takacs et al., 2015).
Four moves summarize it: ask open questions, repeat and expand what the child says, invite predictions, and connect the story to the child's own experience.
