Words a child recognizes whole, without sounding them out, typically very frequent ones like the, is and you.
English has many words that do not follow phonics rules. The, said and one are learned faster through repetition than through decoding.
But memorizing sight words does not replace phonics. Decoding is what lets a child read a word they have never seen, and words become sight words once they are familiar (Ehri, 2005).
At home, frequent encounters work best: a list on the wall, hunting for them in a book, matching them on cards.
