The instruction given to a model: what to do, in what form, under what conditions.
The same model gives very different results depending on the instruction. Naming the role, the goal, the format and what to avoid makes output steadier.
Showing a few examples is few shot; describing the task with none is zero shot.
Keep prompts in files rather than in your head. If the task repeats, version the prompt the way you version code.
