A program that takes a goal, breaks it into steps and uses tools to carry it out.
Unlike a single question and answer, an agent alternates between tools: searching, reading files, running code, building towards a result.
It works best where steps are clear and results checkable. Where judgement is fuzzy or actions are hard to undo, keep a human checkpoint.
The design question is permission: read only or write, and where it must stop.
